Effectiveness of self- management educational program on fatigue in sickle cell patients

Background and aims: Fatigue is one of the common symptoms in sickle cell patients by creating depressed mood and decreasing the levels of daily activities of living is caused to decrease the level of quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of self-management program on fatigue in patients with sickle cell disease. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 69 patients with sickle cell disease referred to the Thalassemia Clinic of Ahvaz Shafa Hospital entered the study by census method. Patients received a self-management program that was implemented in two individual educational sessions, a large group session and two small group training sessions for 12 weeks, while their fatigue before the intervention was assessed at the twelfth week and thirty-sixth week using Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) questionnaire. Results: The mean score of fatigue after intervention in patients significantly decreased compared to those before the intervention (P<0.001). Repeated measures test showed that the mean score of fatigue slightly increased in the thirty-sixth week, compared to the twelfth week. However, it was significantly come down in comparison with the intervention baseline (P<0.001). Conclusion: The results indicate the effectiveness of self-management program as a low-cost and non-invasive nursing intervention on the reduction of fatigue in sickle cell patients. Therefore, self-management program as an effective way is advisable to empower the sickle cell patients and help them to manage the disease the health problems.
