Background and aims: Self-esteem is the main and basic factor in social and emotional adjustment and affects all aspects of life such as individual activities. Given the high prevalence of burnout among nurses, the aim of this study was to determine the relationship between self-esteem and burnout among nurses in educational hospitals of Ahvaz. Methods: In this descriptive - analytical study, 300 nurses working in Burn, Emergency Wards and ICU of educational hospitals of Ahvaz, 2013, were selected by census method. Data were collected by demographic, Maslach Burnout Inventory and Cooper- Smith inventory of self- esteem, and then they were analyzed. Results: In this study, 248 nurses (82.7%) were female. The mean age of nurses was (30.76 ±4.92) years. The mean self-esteem scores of nurses were (81.91±28.74). The results showed that most nurses had moderate levels of burnout in all dimensions, except the intensity of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. The only significant correlation was found between self-esteem and frequency of personal accomplishment (r=-0.105, P=0.035). Correlation was found between self-esteem and other aspects of burnout, but this association was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusions: Regarding the relationship between self-esteem and frequency of personal accomplishment, and also moderate to low level of self-esteem and moderate to high levels of burnout in nurses, taking measures to enhance self-esteem of nurses is essential.
